Assistant Attorney General - Bankruptcy Division-Collections Unit
The Tennessee Attorney General and Reporter represents all state officials, employees, agencies, departments, boards, and commissions in matters arising from their public duties. Such representation includes litigation, transactional assistance, and general legal advice to a wide variety of State entities. The Attorney General’s Office employs approximately 200 attorneys organized into 17 legal divisions within 5 sections.
About the Division | Unit:
The Collections Unit is part of the Bankruptcy Division which is part of the Public Protection Section of the Attorney General’s Office. The Collections Unit represents the interest of state agencies in collecting outstanding debts owed to the State. The Collections Unit handles enforcement actions reducing administrative orders to judgments and assists state agencies in recovering debts, judgments, taxes, fines, penalties, and other obligations.
Job Overview:
The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Attorney General include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Developing case strategy and communicating that strategy to the client agency,
- Collaborating with other attorneys, paralegals, and support staff,
- Analyzing documentary and related evidence and developing legal theories,
- Drafting memoranda and court pleadings that are clear and concise, and
- Promoting the office’s core values of “civility, client-focused, collaboration, disciplined, and integrity.”
The preferred candidate will have the following qualifications:
- At least two years of active litigation experience,
- Experience with collections law and/or creditors’ rights matters,
- Exceptional time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize assignments,
- Ability to collaborate as part of an overall team,
- Demonstrated excellence in legal research and writing, and
- Active Tennessee law license in good standing.
