Attorney General Slatery Names Associate Chief Deputy

 Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery today announced that Bill Young will rejoin the Office as associate chief deputy.  Young, a former solicitor general with the Office, will supervise special projects, oversee legislative matters, coordinate multistate initiatives with the National Association of Attorneys General, and assist with the daily operations of the office.

            “I have had the privilege of working closely with Bill on a number of matters over the past few years.  He is well-known and well-respected and I am pleased he is returning to the office,” Attorney General Slatery said.  “His experience in the public sector, in particular the relationships that he has forged with members of all three branches of state government, along with his high level private sector experience and his knowledge of the Attorney General’s Office, makes him uniquely qualified for this important leadership position,” Slatery added.

            Young recently served a year as Director of the Administrative Office of the Courts.  Prior to joining the Administrative Office of the Courts, Young served as solicitor general in the Attorney General’s office for more than two years.  In addition, Young worked in the Tax Division of the Attorney General’s office from 1987 until 1995.  He left in 1995 to serve as Deputy Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, a position he held for four years.  Later he was named Senior Vice President, Chief Compliance Officer and General Counsel for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee.

            “I look forward to working with Attorney General Slatery given our good working relationship in other positions,” Young said.  “Though I regret leaving my work with the Tennessee Supreme Court, I could not pass up the exciting opportunity to return to an Office I greatly respect and that provides invaluable service representing the legal interests of this State.

            Young also served as General Counsel with the Tennessee Hospital Association, as President of the Hospital Alliance of Tennessee, and as University Counsel for Vanderbilt University.  He was in private law practice in Washington, D.C., and Nashville, and worked with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.  He was the first law clerk for United States Bankruptcy Judge George Paine.  Young earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Vanderbilt University.

            The Clarksville native is married to Jane Young, who serves as general counsel for the Tennessee Department of Health.  They live in Nashville and have a daughter, Beth, who is currently employed at the Nashville office of Ernst and Young.
