Legal Secretary – Constitutional Defense Division

The Tennessee Attorney General and Reporter represents all state officials, employees, agencies, departments, boards, and commissions in matters arising from their public duties. Such representation includes litigation, transactional assistance, and general legal advice to a wide variety of state entities. The Attorney General’s Office employs approximately 200 attorneys organized into 21 legal divisions within 6 sections.

About the Constitutional Defense Division:

Part of the Special Advocacy Section of the Attorney General’s Office, the Constitutional Defense Division (CDD) specializes in complex constitutional and election-related litigation. CDD complements the work of the Strategic Litigation Unit and the Office of the Solicitor General to protect the will of Tennesseans expressed through their elected government. Many of CDD’s cases involve novel issues, sweeping requests for relief, and fast-paced injunction and appellate proceedings.  The Division strives for excellence in all aspects of its legal representation through high-quality work in a collaborative environment with a meaningful impact.

Job Overview:

The legal secretary supports the day-to-day operation of CDD, working alongside the attorneys of the division to deliver timely support for litigation and with the Deputy to coordinate the administration of the division.

Primary Job Duties:

  • Proofread, format, and file/serve legal documents for attorneys;
  • Maintain case and document management databases, including tracking deadlines;
  • Process incoming mail and electronic filings;
  • Prepare basic filings, letters, and administrative forms for attorneys;
  • Facilitate provision of legal services, such as court reporters and contracted experts;
  • Schedule appointments and meetings;
  • Develop and maintain division records and files;
  • Communicate with court clerks;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED;
  • At least two years of administrative experience;
  • Experience as a legal secretary or other roles in a legal setting strongly preferred.
