Assistant Solicitor General – Office of the Solicitor General
The Tennessee Attorney General and Reporter represents all State officials, employees, agencies, departments, boards, and commissions in matters arising from their public duties. Such representation includes litigation, transactional assistance, and general legal advice to a wide variety of State entities. The Attorney General’s Office employs approximately 200 attorneys organized into 21 legal divisions within 6 sections.
Job Overview:
The Office of the Solicitor General oversees and manages all appellate work – state and federal – in the Office of the Attorney General. It also oversees litigation at all stages involving challenges to the constitutionality or validity of Tennessee law, handles the preparation of formal legal opinions issued by the Attorney General, and evaluates and handles requests to join or author amicus briefs in state and federal litigation nationwide.
Primary Job Duties:
- Developing case strategy, preparing appellate briefs and oral arguments;
- Collaborating with other attorneys, paralegals, and support staff within the office;
- Performing deep legal research on issues of appellate law;
- Drafting Attorney General opinions;
- Reviewing and – in some cases – drafting multi-state amicus briefs;
- Protecting the State’s interests on appeal; and
- Representing Tennessee with excellence in the courtroom and outside the office.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Three or more years of litigating civil, appellate and/or administrative law matters;
- Demonstrated excellence in legal research and writing;
- Familiarity with and interest in federal constitutional law and statutory interpretation;
- Strong analytical, negotiating, and oral advocacy skills;
- Judicial clerkship experience, particularly at the federal appellate level, is strongly favored;
- Commitment to advocating to the interests of the State of Tennessee; and
- Admitted to the Tennessee bar or eligible for admission and in good standing with current bar.
