Assistant Attorney General – Torts Litigation Division

The Tennessee Attorney General and Reporter represents all state officials, employees, agencies, departments, boards, and commissions in matters arising from their public duties.  Such representation includes litigation, transactional assistance, and general legal advice to a wide variety of State entities.  The Attorney General’s Office employs approximately 200 attorneys, organized into 17 legal divisions within 5 sections.

About the Torts Litigation Division:

The Torts Litigation Division (TLD) is part of the State Services and Litigation Section of the Attorney General’s Office. TLD defends the State and its employees in a diverse variety of tort claims brought in all federal and state courts, and the Tennessee Claims Commission.  The torts typically concern health care liability, premises liability, automobile accidents, libel, care of individuals within the State’s custody (in, for example, Tennessee State Veterans’ Homes, mental health facilities or the Department of Children’s Services, but not those housed in prisons), and other personal injury claims, defined by the State’s limited statutory waiver of sovereign immunity.  TLD also defends the constitutionality of State statutes related to litigation, including statutory limitations on claims and remedies.  This division strives to produce excellent work-product in a supportive and collegial environment, while encouraging personal development for each of its members.

Job Overview:

  • The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Attorney General include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Serve as lead counsel on a variety of civil matters from inception through the appeals process,
  • Developing case strategy and communicating that strategy to the client agency,
  • Analyzing documentary and related evidence and developing legal theories,
  • Obtaining, providing, and evaluating oral, written, and electronic discovery,
  • Drafting pleadings, motions, briefs and other court documents,
  • Moderate amount of travel across the State for depositions, hearings, trials and investigations,
  • Negotiating and mediating settlements or trying cases.

The preferred candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Four or more years of civil litigation experience,
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize assignments,
  • Ability to work both independently and with a team,
  • Demonstrated excellence in legal research and writing, and
  • Active Tennessee law license in good standing.
