TDOT Provides Construction Update on SR 111 J-Turn in Putnam County
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is continuing work on the SR 111 J-Turn safety improvements project in Putnam County. Crews are making steady progress as the project nears paving and final configuration.
Recent Construction Progress:
Medians:
· Completed the final lift of base stone on the northbound turn lanes.
· Completed the final lift of base stone on the first southbound turn lane and began placing the second lift on the second turn lane.
Southeast Side:
· Installed the first lift of base stone and began preparing for the second lift.
Northwest Side:
· Installed riprap to raise the grade to subgrade level and began grading toward S. Maple Avenue in preparation for base stone installation.
Traffic Pattern Updates:
· Drivers should expect temporary lane closures, primarily in the fast lane of SR 111 in both directions, during normal work hours as crews continue base stone work and shoulder reconstruction. Motorists should proceed with caution, follow posted signage, and plan for slower travel through the work zone.
What Drivers Can Expect Over the Next Several Weeks:
· Final base stone placement on the remaining median turn lanes, followed by saw cutting interior yellow lines and reconstruction of existing asphalt shoulders.
· Continued base stone installation on both ends of the project.
· In approximately three to four weeks, crews anticipate placing full-depth asphalt throughout the project limits, along with installation of new concrete islands in the median.
· Lane closures may be intermittent but necessary as this next phase moves forward.
As always, motorists are reminded to use TDOT’s motorist information tools and Know Before You Go! by checking travel conditions before departing. Drivers should never tweet, text, or talk on the phone while driving. For the latest updates, visit the TDOT SmartWay Map or dial 511 for statewide travel information.
