CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Drivers traveling along Cherokee Boulevard (State Route 8) from Frazier Avenue to Signal Mountain Boulevard should be aware of an upcoming resurfacing project that will temporarily impact traffic. Beginning tonight, August 19, 2025, from 8:00 pm to 6:00 am local time and continuing for the next two nights to minimize daytime disruptions, Tennessee Department of Transportation contract crews will implement closures for paving between the Stringer’s Ridge tunnel and Signal Mountain Boulevard. Drivers traveling south on Cherokee Boulevard will be detoured US 27 South to Manufacturer’s Road. Drivers traveling north on Cherokee Boulevard will experience shorter delays and be controlled by a flagging operation.

This $1.8 million initiative, collaboratively designed by the City of Chattanooga and the City of Red Bank, was officially approved by the City of Chattanooga and aims to improve overall safety and accessibility of the route. The project will convert the existing four-lane road into a two-lane configuration complete with a center turn lane, on-street parking, and a dedicated bike lane.

Drivers are encouraged to remain alert and exercise caution when traveling through this area. This work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled in case of inclement weather or other unforeseen conditions.

As always, motorists are reminded to use TDOT’s motorist information tools and Know Before You Go! by checking travel conditions before departure. Drivers should never tweet, text, or talk on the phone while driving. For the latest updates, visit the TDOT SmartWay Map or dial 511 for statewide travel information.

Tennessee’s Move Over Law requires drivers to move over for highway workers and emergency vehicles. Violation of this law can result in up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.
