Progress Prompts I-26 Traffic Shift in Erwin

Motorists traveling on I-26 in Unicoi County should be aware of an upcoming traffic shift.

One lane is currently open in each direction on I-26, between MM 39 and 40 in Erwin, utilizing the eastbound side of the roadway. On Friday afternoon, August 15, the outside lane of traffic will be open on each side of the roadway.   The inside lanes on each I-26 bridge will be closed as crews finish up repairs in this area. In addition, the entrance ramp from Jackson Love Highway (Exit 40) to I-26 West will be reopened.

The construction of the I-26 East bridge was completed in March 2025, and the I-26 West bridge is expected to be completed on or before Monday, September 15. These twin bridges were destroyed by Hurricane Helene on September 27, 2024.

This schedule is contingent on favorable weather conditions.  Motorists are advised to expect delays and use extreme caution in this area as workers will be present.
