Grant to make parking, landscaping and pedestrian improvements in Lauderdale County town

HALLS – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Commissioner John Schroer announced today a $411,471 grant to enhance the aesthetics of the downtown area, including the Caboose Park Museum.

The grant funds Phase IV of the Halls Downtown Improvement Project, which runs along North Church Street from the intersection of Main Street to East Tigrett Street and includes the creation of a trailhead parking facility, ADA improvements, sidewalk replacement, and native landscaping.

New park benches, bicycle racks, and decorative lighting will also be installed through the area.

“This project will help Halls’ efforts to improve the downtown experience for residents and visitors,” Haslam said. “Tennessee’s downtowns are the heart of our communities, and making these changes will provide safer transportation alternatives in Halls and help future investments in the downtown area.”

“Through these grants, TDOT has funded more than $294 million in non-traditional transportation projects,” Schroer said.  “This program has assisted communities all over the state in their efforts to revitalize downtowns, highlight historic areas, provide alternative means of transportation, and increase opportunities for economic development.”

The transportation alternative grant is made possible through a federally-funded program formerly known as transportation enhancement, and is administered by TDOT.

A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.

State Senate Democratic Caucus Chair Lowe Finney (D-Jackson) and state House Democratic Leader Craig Fitzhugh (D-Ripley) represent Lauderdale County in the Tennessee General Assembly.
