Haslam Named Vice Chair of National Governors Association Education, Early Childhood and Workforce Committee

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam was announced today as Vice Chair of the National Governors Association (NGA) Education, Early Childhood and Workforce Committee by NGA Chair Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman and NGA Vice Chair Delaware Gov. Jack Markell.

The Education, Early Childhood and Workforce Committee has jurisdiction over issues in the area of education (including early childhood, elementary and secondary education, and higher education) as well as in the areas of workforce development and labor.

Members of the committee ensure that the governors’ views are represented in the shaping of federal policy.

“I am pleased to serve on the NGA Education, Early Childhood and Workforce Committee,” Haslam said. “As governors, we have a unique perspective on federal legislation and regulations. Through this committee, governors can work together to advocate for greater flexibility on federal education policies affecting the states.”

Arkansas Gov.  Mike Beebe will serve as chair of the committee.

In March, Haslam joined Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to serve on a bi-partisan, federal study group co-chaired by U.S. Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Michael Bennett (D-CO).

That group’s mission is to review the effectiveness of education regulations and assessment evaluations in Tennessee and Colorado.

Haslam has two events with Duncan tomorrow, August 10 in Nashville: an education forum and a listening session with rural Tennessee school superintendents.
