Grant to fund Tullahoma Downtown Revitalization Phase II

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam joined state and local leaders today to announce the award of a $256,360 transportation enhancement grant to the City of Tullahoma for Phase II of the Tullahoma Downtown Revitalization Project.

This Tullahoma Downtown Revitalization Project will remove and replace deteriorating concrete sidewalks in the downtown section of N.W. Atlantic Street with a new concrete greenway. Existing landscaping will also be removed and replaced with islands consisting of trees and shrubs that are compatible with the greenway system and the downtown business district. New brick stamped crosswalks and decorative lighting will also be installed in the area.

“This project will further Tullahoma’s efforts to give its downtown a more vibrant, inviting appearance,” Haslam said. “When complete, the project will provide safer transportation alternatives that will increase the sense of community and draw new visitors to the area each year. I am pleased the state is helping with these important improvements as we work to make Tennessee an even better place to live, work and play.”

The grant is made possible through a federally funded program administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT).

“Through Transportation Enhancement grants, TDOT has funded approximately $250 million in non-traditional transportation projects,” TDOT Commissioner John Schroer said.  “Established by Congress in the early 1990’s, the program supports activities designed to strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the nation’s transportation system.”

A variety of activities such as the restoration of historic facilities, bike and pedestrian trails, landscaping and other non-traditional transportation projects are eligible for grant funds under the federal program.

This district is represented by state Rep. Judd Matheny (R-Tullahoma) and state Sen. Eric Stewart (D-Belvidere).
