Strategic Litigation Unit – Assistant Solicitor General
JOB SUMMARY:
The Tennessee Solicitor General's Office is seeking experienced litigators to join the Office's recently established Strategic Litigation Unit as well as serve as Assistant Solicitors General. A priority of Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti, the SLU has a new affirmative litigation mandate for the State of Tennessee. Attorneys in the unit will handle impactful litigation on behalf of Tennessee and its residents in state and federal courts, including defending the separation of powers and the constitutional rights of Tennesseans, protecting federalism principles and policing federal-government overreach, and pursuing transparency and accountability for certain corporate activities that undermine the democratic process and harm consumers. Attorneys will help identify, position, and litigate challenges to federal agency action, including by working to preserve Tennessee's interests through comment letters and engagement in agency rulemaking and building coalitions of states and amici to join affirmative suits.
In addition to assisting with SLU initiatives, attorneys will serve as Assistant Solicitors General. In that capacity, attorneys will participate in the work of the Office of the Solicitor General, including appellate litigation in an array of matters in the U.S. Supreme Court and in federal and state courts of appeal.
The position would be based in Nashville, Tennessee.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
The Office is seeking candidates with a minimum of 2 years' litigation experience, and otherwise has flexibility to structure individual roles and titles to reflect a candidate's background, experience, and seniority. Ideal candidates will be committed to advocating for the interests of State of Tennessee, be licensed in Tennessee or willing to seek immediate admission, and have experience litigating civil, appellate, and administrative-law matters.
TO APPLY:
Application materials can be submitted via our online applicant portal or by email using HRteam@ag.tn.gov. Attorneys should include a cover letter, resume, law school transcript, contact information for at least 3 references, and a legal writing sample.
