NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tommy H. Baker, of Huntingdon, was promoted to Major General in a ceremony held at the Tennessee National Guard Headquarters on Friday, November 9, 2018. Baker, the Assistant Adjutant General-Army, Tennessee National Guard, is responsible for the training and supervision of the more than 9,000 Soldiers in the Tennessee Army National Guard.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Tennessee National Guard Blackhawk helicopters joined the search on Saturday for a missing Ohio woman who disappeared while she was hiking in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park on the North Carolina-Tennessee border.

Three Blackhawk helicopters from the Tennessee National Guard’s 1-230th Assault Helicopter Battalion arrived in North Carolina late yesterday to assist in the relief effort of Hurricane Florence. All three aircraft are equipped to conduct medical evacuation with rescue hoist capability, as well as transport medical patients, and supplies to those in remote areas.

The Tennessee National Guard sent a military police company to South Carolina today to assist residents of that state in the aftermath of Hurricane Florence. More than 100 personnel of the 117th Military Police Battalion departed Athens, Tenn. this morning with the necessary equipment and supplies to operate for approximately two weeks.

On Friday, the State Board of Education launched an English Language Arts (ELA) standards implementation feedback survey at https://www.tn.gov/sbe/topic/standards-review to gather public comments on Tennessee’s recently implemented K-12 ELA standards. All Tennesseans are invited to review the standards, and the survey will remain open through January 31, 2018. The State Board is charged in state law with adopting academic standards for Tennessee students and with reviewing those standards regularly.

As hurricanes ravaged through the southern United States and Caribbean territories this year, the Tennessee National Guard was there. More than 475 Tennessee National Guard Soldiers and Airmen from across the state supported recovery operations in Florida in September. At the same time, nearly 230 more were supporting the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The hearings will be held in the Executive Conference Room on the ground floor of the State Capitol. Haslam, Finance and Administration Commissioner Larry Martin, Chief Operating Officer Greg Adams and David Thurman, state budget director, will preside over the hearings.
