Exam Information

State Board of Examiners for Architects, Engineers, and Land Surveyors

NCEES administers the Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exam. Listed below are the minimum requirements to be considered for admittance.

1. Graduation with an EAC/ABET-accredited undergraduate engineering degree (4-year minimum) or a degree in engineering that has been determined to be substantially equivalent by our Board.

2. Graduation from a four-year curriculum leading to a baccalaureate degree approved by the Board, completion of post-graduate coursework in an engineering curriculum leading to a master's degree or higher in engineering approved by the Board.

3. Graduation from an ABET/ETAC accredited engineering technology curriculum of four years or more that is approved by the Board, holding a post-graduate degree in engineering from an institution with an ABET/EAC accredited undergraduate engineering program approved by the Board.

4. Graduation from an ABET/ETAC accredited engineering technology curriculum of four years or more that is approved by the Board.

Next Steps

Once an applicant passes the Principles and Practice of Engineering examination and has completed all required experience, they will need to apply for initial licensure. See "How to Get a License" for additional information. 

The Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) and Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) are computer-based testing (CBT) examinations with year-round testing windows at professional testing venues throughout the state. Examination candidates may register, schedule, and pay for their exams with NCEES for both the FS & PS examinations.

NCEES will post the results of computer-based exams 7–10 days after an examinee takes an exam. NCEES will notify examinees by email that their results are available through their MyNCEES account. When an examinee logs in to their account, they will see either “Pass” or “Fail” on the screen, with diagnostics provided for failing examinees.
