Interior Designers
Tennessee Board of Architectural and Engineering ExaminersA registered interior designer may provide plans and specifications in connection with reflected ceiling plans, space utilization not affecting life safety, furnishings, or the fabrication of non-structural elements within the interior spaces of buildings.
Requirements
Education and Experience Requirements:
1. A 5-year degree in interior design accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), or one that has been determined to be substantially equivalent to a CIDA-accredited degree, and 1 year of diversified interior design experience; OR
2. A 4-year degree in interior design accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), or one that has been determined to be substantially equivalent to a CIDA-accredited degree, and 2 years of diversified interior design experience; OR
3. A 3-year degree in interior design accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), or one that has been determined to be substantially equivalent to a CIDA-accredited degree, and 3 years of diversified interior design experience; OR
4. A 2-year degree in interior design accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA), or one that has been determined to be substantially equivalent to a CIDA-accredited degree, and 4 years of diversified interior design experience.
Substantial equivalency means comparable in program content and level of educational experience, but not necessarily identical in format or method of delivery. It implies that the graduates of these programs possess the necessary competencies to begin professional engineering practice at the entry level.
Examination Requirements: The Board no longer pre-approves candidates for examinations. All exam inquiries should be directed to CIDQ at https://www.cidq.org/. Passage of the LARE examination must be complete prior to applying for licensure.
Additional Requirements:
1. Must be at least 21 years of age.
2. Must not hold a license in any other state or jurisdiction. This application is only for initial licensure.
