NASHVILLE—Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development Commissioner Randy Boyd along with Cummins, Inc. officials announced today the company will invest $6.7 million to expand its current parts and distribution center in Memphis, creating 70 new jobs for Shelby County.

“I am extremely pleased Cummins, Inc. is expanding in Tennessee,” Boyd said. “Our department isn’t just focused on recruiting new businesses to the state. We also work hard to nurture and support all of our existing industries, which is why it’s so rewarding to see Cummins, Inc.’s continued growth.”

Cummins Inc. is a global power leader that designs, manufactures, distributes and services diesel and natural gas engines and related technologies, including fuel systems, controls, air handling, filtration, emission solutions and electrical power generation systems.

”Memphis and the state of Tennessee have been terrific long-time partners with Cummins and we are pleased to grow and expand in this great city,” Norbert Nusterer, Vice President, Parts Business, Cummins Inc., said. “Memphis is home to our distribution business as well as our remanufacturing business, both of which are important to the success of our Company. Not only has our company had roots in Memphis and across Tennessee for many years, but our employees also have a rich history of community involvement, and we are pleased to continue contributing to the social and economic vibrancy of the region.”

Cummins has multiple operations in Memphis and has been involved with the Memphis community for over 30 years and continues its commitment to the community with this expansion. In 2014 Cummins employees spent over 4,000 hours volunteering in the Memphis community. The Cummins Distribution Center has been in Memphis since 1996 and employees a workforce of more than 800 to distribute a variety of products including component parts, rebuild kits, and remanufactured engines worldwide to insure premium support to their customers.

By expanding the size of the Memphis PDC (parts distribution center), Cummins will be able to support the further growth of global supply chain requirements. This investment will allow the company to synchronize warehousing activities and optimize freight and transportation options, operations that are critical to the success of Cummins and its customer satisfaction.

Cummins partnered with Newmark Grubb Knight Frank’s combined brokerage and consulting team on this project.

“No other city in the world can claim the logistical capabilities like Memphis, and Cummins Inc., knows this,” Phil Trenary, President and CEO of the Greater Memphis Chamber said.

“Cummins is invested in this city’s workforce and its infrastructure.  In partnership with the Chamber and its Chairman’s Circle, Cummins has devoted their time and talent in training our next generation of workers.  To have them continue to grow here as a company solidifies their commitment to Memphis.”

"Retaining and growing Cummins’ distribution center was our primary concern for many months," Reid Dulberger, Chief Economic Development Officer for Memphis and Shelby County and President of EDGE, said. "Mayor Wharton and Mayor Luttrell were personally involved, meeting with local and corporate Cummins officials and coordinating directly with Governor Haslam. As the City and County's economic development arm, EDGE worked to identify and help address the company's needs. In the end, local and state efforts, combined with Cummins’ long-standing commitment to Memphis, proved to be a winning combination."

“TVA and MLGW congratulate Cummins on its announced expansion that creates new jobs at its Memphis operation,” TVA Senior Vice President of Economic Development John Bradley said. “We are pleased to partner with Tennessee ECD, the Greater Memphis Chamber, EDGE, City of Memphis, and Shelby County to support existing business and industry growth.”

Cummins plans to begin expanding in June, with final completion expected in December 2015.
