Save Time and Avoid Lines – Renew Your Driver License Online

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Department of Safety is celebrating the one millionth online driver license renewal through the state of Tennessee’s Web site www.tn.gov. The milestone announcement comes on the tenth anniversary of online driver services.

“The great benefit of renewing online is the convenience of being able to renew 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from any computer with internet access,” said Governor Bredesen. “We continue to work to make more online services available on TN.gov to give Tennesseans more convenient options for their interactions with state agencies.”

There is no additional surcharge for renewing a license online and payment can be made using a credit or check card with a Visa or MasterCard logo, or by using an American Express or Discover card.

Since 2000, when Tennesseans were first provided the opportunity to utilize online services to renew driver licenses, order duplicate licenses and make road test appointments, 1,022,536 customers have successfully renewed their driver license online. Annual online driver license renewals have grown from 1,930 in 2000 to nearly 210,000 in 2009.

The Tennessee Department of Safety reminds residents that many people can save time and avoid a trip to their Driver License Center by renewing their driver license online. If you have a current valid photo license and are not required to provide documentation that you are a U. S. Citizen or a lawful permanent resident at the time of your first renewal, you are typically eligible to renew online at www.tn.gov or www.tn.gov/safety.

“Many people still don’t realize they can renew online,” stated TDOS Deputy Commissioner Greta Dajani. “I encourage anyone who is eligible to renew online to visit the Department of Safety’s Web site and take advantage of this convenience.   Many residents can also renew their license through the mail.”

When a license nears the date of renewal, license holders receive a courtesy notice in the mail approximately 10 weeks prior to expiration encouraging them to renew their license. License holders can renew up to one year in advance of their license expiration date and should renew online, if possible. In addition to renewing a driver license, additional online services can be conducted at www.tennesseeanytime.org/tndlr/, including requesting a duplicate license, changing of address or scheduling a road test. Residents can also view and print the Driver License Manual and a list of documents required to obtain a driver license or photo identification card.
