THP Memphis District Announces Aggressive School Zone Enforcement

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) will announce activities to aggressively enforce school zones during a news conference at the Covington Municipal Airport, Thursday, August 27, 2009. August 24-28, the THP’s Memphis District will utilize every available Trooper to work school zones, follow school buses on their routes and ride on buses. The THP helicopter will also be utilized for air patrol as part of the special school zone enforcement initiative.

Since the THP implemented aggressive enforcement in school zones, there has been an 11.5 percent decrease in the number of crashes occurring in school zones between the hours of 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and the hours of 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. There was also a 17.4 percent decline in the number of school bus-related crashes between those same hours.
