Tennessee Department of Education Announces New Standards Training

NASHVILLE  – The Tennessee Department of Education is pleased to announce the 2009 Summer Standards Trainings. Approximately 4200 Tennessee educators are expected to attend these training sessions across the state as they prepare to implement the Tennessee Diploma Project next school year.

“Raising our standards with the Tennessee Diploma Project is such a crucial component to our students continued success and we must support our teachers and educators as they begin this new endeavor,” Educator Commissioner Dr. Timothy Webb said. “It’s important that we take every opportunity to conduct professional development and allow our teachers to bring that knowledge back to the classroom.”

Training sessions are being held in the following locations in grade bands, content strands for Language Arts K-8, English 9-12, Math K-12 and Science/Biology K-12 with a focus on implementing standards and enhancing content knowledge:

• June 2-4         Memphis, Knoxville, Montgomery
• June 9-11       Lexington, Grainger, McMinn
• June 16-18     Nashville, Cookeville
• June 22-24     Hamilton
• June 23-25     Dyersburg, Blountville

“It’s evident by the large number of participants that our educators are focused and ready to take on the challenge of new curriculum and standards next school year,” said Dr. Connie Smith, Assistant Commissioner of Accountability, Teaching and Learning.
