MEDIA ADVISORY: Agencies Team Up to Host “Share the Road” Festival

NASHVILLE --- The Tennessee Department of Safety is teaming up with the Governor’s Highway Safety Office (GHSO), the Motorcycle Awareness Foundation of Tennessee (MAFT), the Tennessee Truckers Association, the Nashville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), Walk/Bike Nashville and the Murfreesboro Police Department to kick off May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month and National Bicycle Month. A “Share the Road” festival will be held Saturday, May 2, 2009, at Bumpus Harley Davidson in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.  The event, which will feature a bicycle safety course for kids and adults, as well as motorcycle training and road tests, begins at 10:00 a.m. A news conference is scheduled for noon.

More than 800 motorcyclists are expected to attend the festival and participate in a “Blessing of the Bikes” ceremony, followed by a ride to Lynchburg, TN.
 
Across the country, motorcycle fatalities have steadily increased over the past decade. Last year, 143 motorcyclists were killed on Tennessee roadways. The goal of the event is to remind drivers, motorcyclists and bicyclists to “Share the Road” with each other.
 

The Tennessee Department of Safety’s mission is (www.tennessee.gov/safety) to ensure the safety and general welfare of the public. The department encompasses the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Office of Homeland Security and Driver License Services. General areas of responsibility include law enforcement, safety education, motorist services and terrorism prevention.
