NASHVILLE --- A robbery suspect is in custody after leading a Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper on a high speed chase in Robertson County.

At approximately 2:54 a.m. (CST), Trooper Todd Pitts was advised by dispatch of an armed robbery at the BP gas station just off I-24 at exit 11 in Montgomery County. The BOLO report indicated that a suspect in a gray Dodge Durango had robbed the BP station at gunpoint.

Trooper Pitts made contact with the suspect vehicle at a MAPCO station just off the interstate at exit 24 in Robertson County. The suspect had just completed pumping gas at the station when Trooper Pitts motioned to the driver to stop so he could ask him some questions. Initially, the driver complied with a request from Trooper Pitts to see his license, but refused a request to turn off his ignition, and instead spun out and fled the scene.

Trooper Pitts pursued the male subject on Highway 49 in Robertson County. The pursuit continued into Springfield on Highway 257 and Highway 76 where Robertson County deputies deployed spike stripes in an attempt to stop the fleeing vehicle.   At approximately 3:34 a.m., Trooper Pitts stopped the Durango at mile maker 7 on Highway 76 and Oakland Road, two miles east of Highway 49 and arrested the suspect without incident.

James Walter Mason, 44, of Clarksville, was taken into custody and turned over to Clarksville Police. A box of .22 caliber Magnum shells and gun cleaning solvent, along with some cash, were recovered from the vehicle. THP charges are still pending but Clarksville authorities have charged Mason with aggravated robbery.
