Nashville, Tennessee —A 24-year veteran of the Tennessee Highway Patrol is hospitalized in intensive care after being involved in a two-car crash Tuesday night.  It happened at approximately 9:00 p.m. on State Route 105 near Bradford, TN, in Gibson County.

A preliminary investigation reveals that Lieutenant Bobby “Joey” Hargrove was traveling along SR 105 when a 1994 Chevy pickup truck crossed the center line and entered his lane.  Lt. Hargrove, in an attempt to avoid the truck, drove off the side of the highway, but his patrol car was still struck on the left side by the pickup.  The patrol unit crashed into a tree. The pickup driven by 21-year-old Alex D. Lannom of Bradford, TN, came to a rest in a ditch.

Both drivers suffered broken legs, among other injuries, and were transported to Madison County General Hospital.

Lt. Hargrove underwent surgery this morning to set two compound fractures in his left leg.  He also suffered lacerations to his face.

Charges are pending against Lannom.  THP’s Critical Incident Response Team (C.I.R.T.) and Criminal Investigation Division (C.I.D.) are investigating the crash.

Lt. Hargrove started his career as a State Trooper in July 1984.  He has been assigned to Madison, Haywood and Henderson Counties.
