Scrap Metal Dealer Registration Program

Purpose

The Scrap Metal Registration Program was created in 2008 to regulate businesses and individuals that deal in scrap metal in the State of Tennessee. The current requirements for the registration can be found in Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 62, Chapter 9.

Mission

The mission of the Scrap Metal Registration Program is to protect the public health, safety and welfare through the regulation of scrap metal dealers and scrap metal 

Catalytic Converter Consumer Protection Law

To combat the rising number of catalytic converter thefts, the Scrap Metal Registration Program announced a consumer law that took effect July 1, 2021. This law ensures that unattached catalytic converters are being sold to dealers, which originated from salvaged or wrecked vehicles, and not stolen from vehicles.
