Description | This course is designed to help law enforcement and first responders better understand mental illness, mental disorders, and mental crisis. Through understanding and knowledge, law enforcement officers/first responders can more effectively handle calls for service which involve those in crisis. Additionally, Autism, Dementia and Alzheimer’s training will be provided. This course will provide students with communication skills and de-escalation techniques for a more effective and positive disposition when dealing with those in crisis, mental health consumers and citizens in general. Officer Wellness will be discussed to assist with self-evaluation regarding one's own mental health, as well as tools in coping with the vicarious trauma for which a person is exposed in policing. Community resources will also be provided to better assist law enforcement when responding to these call for service. This class meets the training recommendations of de-escalation and officer wellness. |
