Tennessee Private Investigation & Polygraph Examiners

A Polygraph Examiner intern refers to any person who studies polygraph techniques and the administration of polygraph techniques under the personal supervision and control of a local licensed polygraph examiner. Permits initially issued to interns are valid for 12 months, but an intern may apply for a full examiner’s license after completion of 6 months from the date of issue of the internship if they have met all other requirements.

An internship sponsor must be a licensed Tennessee polygraph examiner for at least two years and may not sponsor more than 2 interns at any one time. Intern sponsors shall have interns conduct at least 50 polygraph examinations during the 12-month internship period.

Education Requirements

Graduation from a school of polygraph approved by the American Polygraph Association or the Commission, and one of the following:

  1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, OR
    2. Two (2) years of college credits and, immediately preceding application submission, have been actively engaged in five (5) years of Criminal, Counterintelligence, OR Private investigative work.

Other Requirements

All applicants must satisfactorily complete an internship of at least six (6) months or, in lieu of the completion of the internship, provide satisfactory evidence that the applicant is currently actively engaged in the polygraph examinations business in another state for at least five (5) consecutive years.
