Tennessee Board for Licensing ContractorsA Home Improvement license is required for residential remodeling projects from $3,000 to $24,999; however, this only applies to the counties adopting the law. Currently, this applies to the following counties: Bradley, Davidson, Hamilton, Haywood, Knox, Marion, Robertson, Rutherford, and Shelby. Home improvement is defined in T.C.A. 62-6-501(4)(A) and includes improvements, such as repair, replacement, remodeling, alterations, or additions to any land or residential building. This applies to construction or improvements of driveways, swimming pools, porches, garages, landscaping, fences, roofing, painting, and other improvements.

Licensing Requirements
1. Surety Bond: In the amount of $10,000 (or other financial responsibility in the form of a cash or property bond, or an irrevocable Letter of Credit).
2. Photo ID and Social Security Number
3. Proof of Insurance: General Liability and Worker’s Compensation required
4. Corporate Registration with the Secretary of State, if operating as a corporation, general partnership, or LLC.
5. Experience with performing remodeling work
Application & Fees
Complete the “Initial Home Improvement Contractor Application” online at core.tn.gov. The fee for an initial application is $250.
