2026 Training Plan Notification
2026 Mandatory In-Service Training
The POST Commission identified the following five (5) mandatory topics and hours for the in-service training plan for the 2026 calendar year:
- FIREARMS (8 Hours)
- CHILD ABUSE AND CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE (Number of hours to be set by Agency/Required by Tenn. Code Ann. § 37-1- 603(b)(4)(A)(ii))
- MENTAL HEALTH (Number of hours to be set by Agency)
- DUI TESTING PROCEDURES/REFRESHER (Number of hours to be set by Agency for officers certified on or after January 1, 2023, and all officers assigned to traffic units/Required by Tenn. Code Ann. § 38-8-132)
- EMERGENCY VEHICLE OFFICER CERTIFICATION (EVOC) (2 Hours) – Must pass a comprehensive examination, to include:
1. Training in the operation of the vehicle in emergency and non-emergency situations.
2. A review of all applicable laws pertaining to emergency vehicles.
3. Training to respond to actions of non-emergency vehicles
We recommend that your agencies utilize NHTSA-approved courses for DUI training. Please contact the Tennessee Highway Safety Office for more information regarding DUI Detection and Standardized Field Sobriety Testing courses.
The selection of additional subjects beyond the mandated topics is at the agency's discretion. The material should also meet the educational requirements typical of the rank and responsibility of the officers assigned, in accordance with the course curriculum requirements set forth in Rule 1110-4-05.
