Substance Abuse Prevention Certification

What Is Substance Abuse Prevention Certification?

Substance Abuse Prevention Certification is a basic standard for professional competence in the field of prevention.  Certification as a Prevention Specialist is based on experience and competencies as set by the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC).  All applicants are required to demonstrate their competency defined in the Certified Prevention Specialist Manual and pass the IC&RC written exam.

Who Is Required To Be Certified?

All agencies that have a contract with the Office of Prevention Services are contractually required to have at least one individual in their agency who is certified as a Prevention Specialist.

The mission of the Tennessee Certification Board (TCB) is to establish, promote, certify, and maintain professional credentials that uphold the standard of excellence across the fields of behavioral health, mental health, substance abuse, and prevention in the State of Tennessee.

What Are The Requirements:

Specific requirements to become a Prevention Specialist are outlined on the TN Certification Board’s website.
