Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)

The State of Tennessee is committed to ensuring that TN.gov is accessible to people with disabilities and provides equitable access to the State's digital information, programs, services, and activities.

Accessibility Requirements and Standards

Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) applies to state and local governments and prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. U.S. Department of Justice regulations implementing Title II establish accessibility requirements for state and local government web content and mobile applications, using the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA as the technical standard for covered content.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability in programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance and applies to Tennessee programs and activities receiving such assistance.

The State of Tennessee has also adopted accessibility requirements and standards based on Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. While Section 508 applies directly to federal agencies, Tennessee uses Section 508 standards as part of its accessibility requirements for information and communication technology.

Accessibility is an ongoing responsibility. We continue to identify and address accessibility barriers as technologies, content, and services change.
