TDCI Urges Tennesseans To Enroll In Free Credit Protection/Identity Theft Repair Service

NASHVILLE – Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) Commissioner Julie Mix McPeak encourages Tennessee consumers to enroll in free identity theft repair and credit protection services to protect themselves from potential fraud and identity theft in the wake of the Anthem health benefits breach in January.

Anthem is offering 24 months of free identity theft repair and credit monitoring services to current or former Tennessee members of an affected Anthem plan, dating back to 2004.

“We urge consumers to sign up for free credit protection now to help ensure that their personal data is not further compromised because of the Anthem cyber attack,” McPeak said. “TDCI officials are closely monitoring the situation and are participating in a weekly conference call for updates on Anthem’s progress in mitigating the situation.”

TDCI’s regulators protect consumers from fraudulent activity while ensuring fair competition for industries and professionals who conduct business in Tennessee. A multi-state federal investigation into the Anthem cyber-attack is still ongoing.

Since the Jan. 29 breach, Anthem has been sending notices at a rate of more than 1 million a day to impacted customers, notifying current and former enrollees in Anthem’s affiliated health plans that they may be affected by the breach. Additionally, BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee members who sought medical care in Anthem states, including Georgia, may also be impacted. More than 773,000 Tennesseans’ personal information was potentially compromised during the Jan. 29 breach.
