Temporary Closures Planned for I-40/I-240 Interchange Project

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation will have temporary closures on sections of the interstate system this weekend as crews continue to work on the new east and westbound flyover ramps. This work is part of the I-40/I-240 interchange improvement project. The closures are necessary as crews begin to work on the new deck and continue installing beams over existing roadways.

Thursday, January 22 and Friday, January 23 from 9:00 a.m. through 3:00 p.m.

  • I-240 East (northbound) ramp to go Sam Cooper westbound will be closed each day to allow crews to install three steel beams over the existing ramp.

Saturday, January 24 and Sunday, January 25 from 6:30 a.m. through 5:30 p.m.
There will be a lane closure at the following:

  • The right lane of I-240 West (southbound) just south of I-40/I-240 interchange extending to Walnut Grove (Exit 13) for crews to install portable barrier rail for a shoulder closure
  • The left lanes of I-40 east and westbound north of the Covington Pike interchange will be closed for median foundation work. Exit 10 will remain open.
  • One lane of I-240 West (southbound), the existing flyover for re-striping of pavement markings

Saturday, January 24 6:30 a.m. through Sunday, January 25 at 5:30 p.m.
Saturday, January 31 6:30 a.m. through Sunday, February 1 at 5:30 p.m.

There will be CLOSURES at the following locations:

  • I-240 East (northbound) beginning at Exit 12C (northbound I-240 exit to go I-40 eastbound)
  • I-240 East (northbound) at Exit 12B to go westbound Sam Cooper
  • Sam Cooper westbound Exit 10B to go I-240 East (northbound)

The work is weather dependent.  Should inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances prevent this work from occurring as scheduled, it will be rescheduled.

Traffic will be encouraged to use SR 385 as an alternate route. Detour maps and information will be provided on the project web site. http://www.tdot.state.tn.us/i40-240memphis/
