Weekly Construction Report for Parts of East and Middle Tennessee for April 3 - April 9, 2014

BRADLEY COUNTY, I-75 construction of a concrete Bulb-Tee Beam Bridge, including grading, drainage and paving at the Exit 20 interchange (U.S. 64 Bypass East, U.S. 74 East, SR-311, APD-40) (LM 4.86) in Cleveland:  Work continues on this project.  The contractor will be performing a bridge deck pour on Thursday, April 3 between 7AM-5PM.  Other than possibly having to stop to allow a concrete truck to access the work area, traffic will be unaffected.  On Tuesday, April 8, 2014 between 9:30 PM- 6AM the contractor will conduct another bridge deck pour.  During this pour, northbound entrance and southbound exit ramps of Exit 20 will be affected.  Signs will be posted and flaggers and THP will assist with traffic during the bridge deck pours.  Additionally, the contractor will be working on clearing and drainage and doing bridge work during this report period.  APD-40 south going toward I-75 is down to one lane from Exit 20 to the end of the project.  The designated right turn lane on APD-40 will be closed to allow the contractor to begin widening the roadway, and the I-75 northbound on-ramp is reduced to a 16-foot lane.  Any work requiring interstate lane closures is limited to Sunday through Thursday nights between 7PM - 6AM.  Signs will be posted and flaggers will assist with traffic control if needed.  THP will assist with traffic control as necessary during interstate lane closures.  Estimated project completion date is November 2015. 

BRADLEY COUNTY, Benton Pike, Durkee Road, and Michigan Avenue, grading, drainage, and paving on a State Industrial Access route serving the Whirlpool Corporation:  The contractor continues work on this project at the Whirlpool Corporation plant.  Traffic will be down to one lane in the west bound lanes approaching the intersection of Durkee Road and U.S. 64 due to the contractor laying pipe.  Flaggers will assist with traffic control as needed.  Estimated project completion date is July 2014. 

BRADLEY, MCMINN and POLK COUNTIES, miscellaneous safety improvements on the following routes: SR-74 from the Georgia State line to SR-313; SR-313 from SR-74 to Cedar Springs Road; Lamontville Road from Bethel Spring Road to I-75; and on Benton Station Road from Mull Road to SR 33:  There will be intermediate flagging operations on SR-313, Benton Pike and Lamontville Road as the contractor installs new signs. There will be intermittent lane closures as the contractor is installing permanent signs and working on striping the roadway.  Flaggers will assist with traffic control as needed.  Estimated project completion date is May 2014. 

CANNON / WARREN COUNTY, U.S. 70S (SR-1) grading, drainage, and construction of a concrete I beam bridge from near SR-281 in Cannon County to near SR-287 in Warren County:  The majority of the work has been completed on this project.  However, all motorists should continue to use caution and be alert to construction equipment and vehicles within the work zone.  Estimated project completion date is April 2014. 

CANNON / WARREN COUNTY, U.S. 70S (SR-1) paving from near SR-281 in Cannon County to Spring Valley Road in McMinnville, Warren County:  Work continues on this project.  All motorists should use caution and be alert to construction equipment and vehicles on the project.  Flaggers may be present on side roads.  No interruption of traffic is expected.  Estimated project completion date is September 2014. 

COFFEE COUNTY, I-24 grading, drainage and paving at the eastbound and westbound weigh stations from MM 117-115.5:  The contractor will have shoulder closures on I-24 East and West as work on this project continues.  No interstate lane closures are scheduled during this report period.  Lane closures on I-24 will only be allowed nightly from 6PM – 6AM.  THP will assist with traffic control as necessary during interstate lane closures and one lane in each direction will remain open at all times.  Estimated project completion date is November 2014. 

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, SR-462 new construction from U.S. 70 (SR-1) to U.S. 70N (SR-1), including grading, drainage and paving:  Work continues on this project.  Motorists should be alert for construction vehicles and equipment that may be entering or leaving the jobsite.  Beginning on Monday, April 7 Northside Drive will be closed to thru traffic for approximately two weeks to allow construction activities necessary to tie this road into SR-462.  Northside Drive is scheduled to reopen to traffic by April 21, 2014.  Estimated project completion date is June 2014. 

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, U.S. 127 (SR-28) bridge repair over Obed River (LM 17.50):  Construction signs, portable barrier rail, arrowboards and barrels have been installed to reduce traffic from two lanes to one lane on both the northbound and southbound bridges.  Traffic on each bridge has been switched to the opposite lane to allow construction activities to continue.  Estimated project completion date is November 2014. 

DEKALB COUNTY, SR-26 (U.S. 70) construction of a welded steel plate girder bridge and three retaining walls over the Caney Fork River and Sligo Road (LM 24.58):  This bridge replacement project is underway.  During construction, the current bridge over the river will remain open to traffic until the new structure is constructed and able to carry traffic.  The contractor may have short lane closures to perform various operations on an as-needed basis.  Flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic control.  Estimated project completion date is June 2016. 

HAMILTON COUNTY, U.S. 41 (SR-8, Ringgold Rd.) grading, drainage and paving at the intersection of I 75 South off-ramp (LM 1.07) at Exit 1:  Work has resumed on this project.  A temporary lane closure is possible on the off-ramp.  Traffic on I-75 southbound should not be affected.  THP and flaggers will assist with traffic control as necessary.  Estimated project completion date is April 2014. 

HAMILTON COUNTY, U.S. 27 (SR-29) reconstruction project from Manufacturers Road (Olgiati Bridge over the Tennessee River) to U.S. 127 (SR-8, Signal Mountain Road/Boulevard):  Weather permitting, the contractor may have lane closures throughout the project area on weeknights to perform road work.  They will also be working on retaining walls and bridges throughout the project area.  During nighttime work, at least one lane will remain open in each direction.  THP will assist with traffic control on the project as necessary.  Estimated project completion date is February 2015. 

HAMILTON COUNTY, construction of a State Industrial Access route serving Volkswagen Group of America, including grading, drainage and paving:  Work on this project continues.  The contractor is in the process of clearing and taking care of environmental measures in order to start on road and drainage.  Traffic will not be impacted at this time therefore, no lane closures are needed.  Estimated project completion date is September 2014. 

HAMILTON and BRADLEY COUNTIES, I-75 from MM 13.9 to MM 25.3 expansion of Chattanooga SmartWay Intelligent Traffic System:  Work on this project continues.  There will be daytime shoulder closures throughout the project area as the contractor performs work for future traffic cameras and dynamic message signs.  Estimated completion date is May 2014. 

JACKSON COUNTY, SR-262 bridge repair over Cumberland River (LM 7.56):  Work continues on this project.  Temporary traffic signals have been activated, and the bridge is down to one lane and controlled by the signals for the duration of the project.  During this report period, the contractor will close the bridge for short durations while pouring concrete from 7AM – 5PM.  Motorists should expect delays.  Flaggers will assist with traffic control as necessary.  Estimated project completion date is May 2014. 

MARION and HAMILTON COUNTIES, I-24 resurfacing project from the end of Tennessee River Bridge at Nickajack in Marion County near mile marker 161 extending through Hamilton County to the Georgia State Line near mile marker 167, including bridge deck repair:  Construction signs have been installed for this project.  This is a nighttime paving operation, and work will occur on both sides of the interstate simultaneously.  During this report period, the contractor will be performing milling and paving operations on both sides of the interstate throughout the project area.  Milling and paving operations requiring lane closures will be limited to Sunday through Thursday nights between 9PM – 6AM.  The only exception to this time restriction will be for bridge expansion joint repairs, which are scheduled to occur during this report period.  From Friday, April 4 at 9PM CDT until Monday, April 7 at 5AM CDT, the contractor will have lane closures for bridge joint repair.  Crews will begin on the bridges on the westbound side of I-24, and if time allows, they will continue on the bridges on the eastbound side.  This could allow the bridge repair component of the project to be completed in two weekends.  One lane will remain open to traffic at all times during paving and bridge repair operations.  THP will assist with traffic control as necessary during interstate lane closures.  Estimated project completion date is September 2014.  

MARION COUNTY, U.S. 41 (U.S. 64, U.S. 72, SR-2) replacement of the truss bridge over the Tennessee River at Nickajack Lake (LM 21.14) with a multi-span steel plate girder bridge:  The truss bridge is now closed to all through traffic until the new adjacent bridge currently under construction is completed.  A detour route that adds an additional 1.5 miles to the current route is posted.  Estimated date to have the bridge open to traffic is late summer 2014, with the final completion of the project by the end of the year. 

MCMINN COUNTY, SR-30 widening project, including grading, drainage, paving, construction of a concrete box beam bridge and retaining wall from County Road 609 to the 4-lane section in Etowah:  The contractor is moving dirt in this phase of the project.  Traffic is now detoured onto the new traffic lanes starting from east of County Road 609 and detouring back onto the old SR-30 at County Road 623.  Drivers are urged to use caution and pay attention to construction signs in this area.  Flaggers will assist with traffic control as needed.  Estimated project completion is November 2014. 

MEIGS COUNTY, SR-30 relocation beginning east of the Tennessee River to west of SR-58:  Paving operations have resumed on this project.  Flaggers will assist with traffic control as needed.  Estimated project completion is April 2014. 

PUTNAM COUNTY, I-40 resurfacing project from east of SR-56 (Exit 280) to near east of SR-136 (MM 287, LM 19.65), including bridge expansion joint repair:  Construction signs have been installed for this project, and work will begin on this project during this report period.  This is a nighttime paving operation and work will occur on both sides of the interstate simultaneously.  Milling and paving operations requiring lane closures will be limited to Sunday through Thursday nights between 9PM – 6AM.  The only exception to this time restriction will be for bridge expansion joint repairs, which are not scheduled at this time.  One lane will remain open to traffic at all times during paving operations.  THP will assist with traffic control as necessary during interstate lane closures. 

VAN BUREN COUNTY, SR-111 grading, drainage, and paving from south of Manus Road to south of SR-285 near Double Bridge Road:  Work continues on this project.  Temporary traffic control signs have been installed, and clearing is currently underway.  Motorists should use caution and be alert to construction equipment and vehicles within the work zone.  Project completion date is November 2015. 

WARREN COUNTY, SR56; repair of bridge over Mountain Creek (LM 22.47):  The bridge currently is down to only one lane of traffic, and it is being maintained and controlled by a temporary signal for the safety of the traveling public.  Motorists should expect delays up to 6 minutes.  Project completion date is May 2014.
