Cosmetology Board announces new online application for exam candidates

NASHVILLE - The Board of Cosmetology is excited to announce the new online process for submitting student candidate information for the theory and practical portions of all cosmetology examinations. Starting October 1, 2013, cosmetology schools will be able to upload candidate information through a secure website provided by the current testing vendor, PSI.

“Our stakeholders expressed to us their concerns about the efficiency of submitting exam applications by mail,” said Assistant Commissioner Bill Giannini. “We heard their concerns and worked hard to identify a solution. This new program will save cosmetology schools both time and money and that is something we can all be excited about.”

Prior to the launch of the application website, representatives from the Board of Cosmetology and PSI will be traveling to Knoxville, Nashville and Memphis to host informative open houses for all school administrators interested in learning about this new program and process.  Dates for the open houses will be posted online at http://tn.gov/regboards/cosmo/.

“The open houses are a great opportunity to learn all about the electronic application submission system and get answers to any questions school administrators and staff may have,” said Roxana Gumucio, Executive Director of the Board of Cosmetology.

From October 1, 2013, to December 31, 2013, cosmetology schools will have the option of using the electronic application submission system or continuing to submit paper applications. Beginning January 2, 2014, PSI will be using the electronic submission program exclusively and at that time the Board will urge all schools to use the new website as opposed to mailing in paper applications.

The Tennessee Board of Cosmetology, within the Department of Commerce and Insurance, regulates the practice of cosmetology, including the licensure and registration of cosmetologists, instructors, aestheticians, manicurists, shampoo technicians, natural hair stylists, cosmetology shops, and cosmetology schools.
