Tennessee, Mississippi Emergency Management Directors Promote Preparedness for Earthquakes

Memphis, TN – The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) Director James Bassham and Mississippi Emergency Management (MEMA) Director Robert Latham will be in Memphis on Friday, Oct. 11, 2013, to promote earthquake preparedness, discuss regional catastrophic disaster planning efforts, and highlight the upcoming Great Central U.S. ShakeOut earthquake drill.

The states are encouraging their schools, businesses, organizations, government agencies, communities, and households to participate in the activity. Nationwide, more than 40 states and 15 million people are currently expected to participate in Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills.

  • Jim Wilkinson, Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium executive director

Media Setup can start at 10 a.m. Parking will be indicated for media near the facility. Media will have an opportunity ask questions of both directors and for individual interviews following the press conference.

The Great Central U.S. ShakeOut is being coordinated by the Central US Earthquake Consortium and its Member and Associate States and dozens of other partners. The ShakeOut is designed to help individuals and communities in the region get ready for earthquakes, practice how to protect themselves, and to prevent disasters from becoming catastrophes.  For more information on this region-wide earthquake drill, visit:
