Sequatchie Co. Woman Charged with TennCare "Doctor Shopping"

NASHVILLE – A Sequatchie County woman is charged with TennCare fraud involving “doctor shopping,” or using TennCare healthcare insurance benefits to go to multiple doctors to obtain prescription drugs.

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) today announced the arrest of Christy L. Stewart, 32, of Dunlap.   She is charged with TennCare fraud by doctor shopping for controlled substances, specifically the painkiller Hydrocodone, using the TennCare program for payment. The Sequatchie County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the arrest.

“The State of Tennessee has targeted TennCare fraud for elimination, especially in the area of prescription drugs,” Inspector General Deborah Faulkner said.  “Many times, these drugs are resold – this is illegal and a misuse of the TennCare program that will not be tolerated by the Office of Inspector General, local officials or taxpayers.”

TennCare fraud is a Class E felony, carrying a sentence of up to two years in prison.  District Attorney General J. Michael Taylor is prosecuting.

The OIG, which is separate from TennCare, began full operation in February 2005 and has investigated cases leading to over $3.5 million paid in restitution and recoupment to TennCare, with a total estimated cost avoidance of over $173 million for the TennCare program, according to latest figures.  To date, over 1,700 people have been charged with TennCare fraud.
