TDOT Meets With Local Groups to Discuss SR 126 Project

Friday, June 29, 2012 | 10:09am
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – On Friday, June 22, Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) Commissioner John Schroer met with representatives from historic Yancey’s Tavern, the East Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, and other local community organizations to further discuss the State Route 126 widening project in Kingsport.

The meetings took place in coordination with the Kingsport Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization (KMTPO).

Design plans are still underway for State Route 126. TDOT and local groups agree that there are safety concerns on this roadway. TDOT is looking at different options in an effort to minimize the impact this project will have for citizens that work, live and travel through this area.

“We are working to improve safety on this road, in addition to protecting the historic property at Yancey’s Tavern and ensuring the gravesites are not affected, while also balancing the needs and desires of the community,” said Schroer.

The Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) has been completed for the State Route 126 widening project. The next public hearing for this project is expected to be sometime within the next six months.
