NASHVILLE - The Tennessee Department of Revenue announces the promotion of Barbara Sampson to Assistant Commissioner. Sampson will focus on tax policy and legislation and will serve as Revenue’s primary liaison to the General Assembly. She will also oversee the Department’s research office and serve a key role in assisting the Commissioner of Revenue with the coordination and communication of tax policy both within the Department and with taxpayers.

“Barbara has a deep understanding of the Department’s operations and the taxes we administer,” said Revenue Commissioner Richard Roberts. “With her knowledge and experience, I am confident that she will continue in this new role to help the Department provide the best possible service to the taxpayers of this State.”

A native of Clarksville, Tenn., Sampson earned her degree in business administration from Austin Peay State University with a major in accounting. She began her career at the Department in 1982 as a tax auditor and has served in a number of supervisory and management positions within the Audit Division and most recently as the Director of Tax Policy.
