TDOT Announces Pedestrian Safety Project in Clarksville

Nashville, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) today announced plans to install signalized crosswalks at five intersections along State Route 12 (Ashland City Highway)/US 41A (Fort Campbell Blvd.).

 

Clarksville City Councilwoman Deanna McLaughlin contacted TDOT with safety concerns along Fort Campbell Blvd after several incidents involving pedestrians. From 2007 to 2011, six pedestrians have been killed on Fort Campbell Blvd. TDOT launched a Road Safety Audit Review in June 2011 and has a developed a project designed to provide safer crossing areas for pedestrians.

 

"I am excited to be part of this exciting TDOT project announcement. It has been a true honor for me to work with TDOT and the safety planning team during the past year. They all truly care about the safety of our citizens," said Councilwoman McLaughlin.

 

The project includes:

 

·         Installing pedestrian warning signs in both directions along Fort Campbell Blvd.

·         Retrofitting five existing signalized intersections to include crosswalks, ADA compliant curb ramps, and countdown pedestrian signals. The five intersections are:       

o   Fort Campbell Blvd. at Peachers Mill

o   Fort Campbell Blvd. at Lafayette/Sinclair

o   Fort Campbell Blvd. at Concord/West Concord

o   Fort Campbell Blvd. at Cunningham

o   Fort Campbell Blvd. at Quinn

 

The safety of all motorists is a top priority for TDOT and the City of Clarksville. TDOT feels strongly that this project will greatly improve pedestrians’ ability to safely cross several areas of this busy road in Clarksville.               

TDOT has secured funding for the Pedestrian Safety Project and is currently finalizing the design plans. The project is expected to begin in the Fall of 2012.
