Thursday, April 05, 2012 | 12:12pm
NASHVILLE – Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam and state Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Many-Bears Grinder today announced April 5, 2012 as Gold Star Wives Day to honor the spouses of service members who have died in the line of duty or as a result of service-connected disabilities.

Gold Star Wives of America, Inc., is a Congressional chartered, non-profit organization created by the war widows of World War II in the State of New York on December 18, 1945. Eleanor Roosevelt was a member of one of the 15 signers of the original Gold Star Wives of America, Inc., papers.

“Gold Star Wives have sacrificed a great deal to their country already, but they are committed to continue to serve service members and veterans to strengthen our communities.” Grinder said. “Their support also encourages other wives and families facing the loss of a loved one and they should be commended for their compassion and dedication.”

Gold Star Wives of America members have established networks across the country to remain active in the military community. There are two chapters of Gold Star Wives in Tennessee.

Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs Assistant Commissioner Don Smith will present Haslam’s proclamation during the Southeast Conference for Gold Star Wives on Saturday, April 21 at the Sheraton Read House, 827 Broad Street in Chattanooga.

The Tennessee Department of Veterans Affairs is organized to accomplish its mission of serving Tennessee's veterans and their families with dignity and compassion, and being their principle advocate in ensuring they receive the care, support, earned entitlements, and recognition they earned in service to our nation.
