Tennessee Rehabilitation Center Grads Ready To Move Ahead
DHS Commissioner Delivers Commencement Address, Aug. 26, To Graduating Class
NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Rehabilitation Center in Smyrna, Tenn., will honor more than six dozen graduates – students that have gained new skills to help them work jobs ranging from commercial cleaning and auto maintenance to business education and food service/hospitality -- during its summer commencement program on Friday, August 26.
Department of Human Services Commissioner Raquel Hatter will deliver the TRC commencement address, sharing the podium with a student speaker during the graduation program that begins at 10 a.m. in the center’s gymnasium.
“I am honored to personally meet these remarkable TRC graduates as well as deliver the commencement address,” Hatter said. “Each year more than 1,000 individuals with disabilities receive rehabilitation services provided by TRC to help them prepare to enter, or re-enter, the work force, ultimately offering them a better quality of life. The efforts and achievements of each of these students are truly commendable.”
The center, one of eight state-operated comprehensive rehabilitation facilities in the United States, is operated by DHS’ Division of Rehabilitation Services. Since opening its doors in 1977, the TRC has provided life and job skills training to more than 32,000 Tennesseans living with disabilities.
Services are provided on campus and the majority of students live in residential units on campus while receiving services.
