Senator Mark Norris Re-elected Chairman of the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR)

NASHVILLE—Senator Mark Norris was re-elected as Chairman of the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR) at the June 29, 2011 meeting. Mayor Tom Rowland of Cleveland was re-elected as Vice-Chairman. 

 

Senator Norris has represented Senate District 32 since 2000 and has served as a member of TACIR since 2001. He was elected Senate Majority Leader in 2007 and is the first West Tennessean to serve as Republican Senate Majority Leader in state history.  Norris also serves as Chair of the Senate Rules Committee and as a member of Senate Ethics; Calendar; Finance, Ways & Means; and State and Local Government Committees.  He currently chairs the Southern Legislative Conference of the Council of State Governments which includes 15 southern states and will hold its annual meeting in Memphis in July. 

 

Mayor Tom Rowland has been Mayor of the City of Cleveland, in Bradley County, Tennessee for 20 years, the longest-serving Mayor of Cleveland. He has served as a member of TACIR for 16 years, 8 as Vice Chairman. Mayor Rowland served as the President of the Tennessee Municipal League from 2002 – 2003. 

 

The TACIR is a permanent state agency established by the General Assembly in 1978 to monitor the operation of federal-state-local relations and make recommendations for improvements. TACIR’s mission is to serve as a forum for the discussion and resolution of intergovernmental problems, provide high quality research support to state and local government officials in order to improve the overall quality of government in Tennessee; and to improve the effectiveness of the intergovernmental system to better serve the citizens of Tennessee.
