April Storm and May Flood Victims Can Apply Starting Monday June 13
NASHVILLE – Tennessee residents in 11 counties who continue to suffer through the lingering effects of April’s violent storms and May’s flooding may be eligible for some relief in the form of Disaster Food Stamps, which have been approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

On Monday, June 13, the Tennessee Department of Human Services will begin issuing USDA-approved disaster SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly food stamps) benefits to eligible residents of four flood-damaged counties and seven storm-battered counties that were also declared federal disaster areas. Applications for SNAP benefits will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 13-17 at DHS county offices (list follows) for residents of Gibson, Lauderdale, Lincoln, Tipton (flooding), Carroll, Crockett, Hardin, Henry, Knox*, Madison and Montgomery (storms) counties. (*Knox is in the Eastern time zone.)

Residents of those counties who sustained disaster-related loss or damages, and are not currently receiving SNAP (food stamp) assistance but wish to apply for SNAP disaster benefits, are asked to bring identification, address information, Social Security verification, statements of income or resources, and estimated disaster expenses. Eligibility determinations will be made, and benefits in the form of EBT (electronic benefit transfer) cards will be distributed the same day. The benefits represent up to a one-month allotment of food stamps for the appropriate household size, and can be used for up to 90 days at any authorized SNAP grocery retailer. Current SNAP recipients, who sustained disaster-related loss or damages, may be eligible for supplemental benefits and may inquire at their respective county office.
