Roane County Woman Charged with TennCare Drug Fraud

NASHVILLE – A Roane County woman is charged with TennCare fraud for selling prescription drugs that had been paid for by TennCare, the state’s public healthcare program for people who are poor and disabled.

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) today announced the arrest of Baby Girl Williams, 45, of Harriman, after joint investigation with the Roane County Sheriff’s Office.

Williams has been charged with one count of TennCare fraud for allegedly using her TennCare benefits to obtain a prescription, while planning to unlawfully sell a portion of the prescription.

 “We are working with local police agencies across the state, as they have targeted prescription drug abuse in their communities,” Inspector General Deborah Y. Faulkner said. “We’re committed to stopping this activity in the TennCare program, where public dollars are involved.”

The TennCare fraud charge against Williams could result in a two year sentence, if convicted. District Attorney General Russell Johnson is prosecuting.

The OIG, which is separate from TennCare, began full operation in February 2005 and has investigated cases leading to over $2.5 million paid in restitution and recoupment to TennCare, with a total estimated cost avoidance of over $171 million for the TennCare program, according to latest figures.  To date, over 1,300 people have been charged with TennCare fraud.
