CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –Shortly after midnight CST on Sunday, February 20, a major rockslide occurred on SR-108 near mile marker 24 in Grundy County, resulting in total closure of the roadway. The slide area is on the portion of SR-108 that is between the towns of Viola in Warren County and Altamont in Grundy County. This section of SR-108 averages approximately 2,050 vehicles per day.

TDOT geologists and other personnel were immediately dispatched to the site where they assessed the situation. As a result of the assessment, an emergency contract for cleanup of the rockslide was awarded on the afternoon of February 20, 2011 to Wright Brothers Construction of Charleston, TN. The contractor immediately began mobilizing equipment and work to clear the roadway began that evening.

It is estimated that there are 23,000 tons of material consisting mostly of sandstone boulders that will need to be cleared before the roadway can be repaired and reopened to traffic. This work should take approximately three weeks to complete. Detours have been posted.
