                   Register Online Now for Workshops in Jackson, Knoxville and Murfreesboro

NASHVILLE – The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development’s Energy Division announced today it will offer Energy Management Workshops for K-12 schools and school districts in Jackson, Knoxville and Murfreesboro this fall. These one-day workshops entitled “Energy Management + Energy Education = Energy Savings” are free; however, space is limited and registration is required.

“With the rising costs of energy, schools are challenged to find new ways to conserve energy and generate savings,” Molly Cripps, director, Energy Division, ECD, said. “The Energy Management Workshops provide a foundation for educators and students to learn about energy conservation, tracking energy usage and how energy conservation efforts and projects can provide long-term benefits for the school.”

The workshops will offer two tracks: one focusing on energy management and the other on energy education. Schools and/or school districts are encouraged to develop a core energy team and send a representative from each of the following departments: administration/finance, curriculum, facilities/operations and one or more classroom teachers.

The workshops will provide tools, curriculum and hands-on classroom kits to help schools meet instructional and facilities energy goals. Schools must register online for one of the following workshops at least eight days in advance:

Jackson – Tuesday, Nov. 29, Doubletree Jackson, 1770 Highway 345 Bypass
Knoxville – Thursday, Dec. 1, Knoxville Hilton Downtown, 501 West Church Avenue
Murfreesboro – Tuesday, Dec. 6, Doubletree Murfreesboro, 1850 Old Fort Parkway

The one-day workshops provide schools and school districts the opportunity to:

• Learn how to track utility usage and costs with Portfolio Manager;
• Benchmark utility costs to measure program success;
• Develop an energy management program that provides real solutions and savings;
• Partner district instructional staff and facilities staff to integrate teaching and learning about energy into district energy goals;
• Learn a step-by-step systems approach for creating both district and school based energy management programs;
• Understand resources available from ECD and the Tennessee Energy Efficient Schools Initiative for improving energy efficiency and conservation in school buildings; and
• Use technical and curricular resources to help set and meet energy performance goals.

Sessions will be conducted by technical and educational specialists in the energy field, including guest speakers from Tennessee school districts that have successfully implemented the best practices presented in the workshops.

The Energy Management Workshops are sponsored by ECD, the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project and the Tennessee Energy Efficient Schools Initiative. All workshops include breakfast, lunch and course materials free of charge.
