Power of Saving Recognized on Teach Children to Save Day

NASHVILLE — Tennessee Banking Commissioner Greg Gonzales reminds citizens that April 27 is Teach Children to Save Day and encourages Tennesseans to teach children the importance of saving and understanding basic financial concepts.

Teach Children to Save Day is a national campaign of the American Bankers Association Education Foundation that raises awareness about the role that banks and bankers play in helping young people develop lifelong savings habits. The campaign has reached 3.4 million young people since its creation in 1997 and offers resources for teaching children to recognize the importance of saving and financial literacy.

“Providing our youth with a basic understanding of financial concepts and helping them recognize the power of saving not only improves their personal well-being but also strengthens our financial institutions by establishing a more knowledgeable and savvy customer base,” Gonzales said.

Teaching children the importance of saving is a valuable lesson that should be taught at an early age. The habit of saving, budgeting and balancing financial obligations should start at home and continue to be taught as a child grows. Teaching children how to save can be a fun activity that instills an important life lesson.

“Every day, Tennesseans engage in transactions with financial institutions. By encouraging our children to participate in financial activities, we create greater financial awareness,” Gonzales said. “It is my hope that if we instill good financial habits in our youth at an early age, they will have the confidence and knowledge to make good financial decisions.”
