Governor Bredesen Proclaims April Tennessee Financial Literacy Month

Thursday, April 01, 2010 | 06:32am
NASHVILLE—Governor Phil Bredesen has declared April Tennessee Financial Literacy Month in acknowledgement of organizations working to promote financial literacy.

“Financial literacy is vital to ensuring our citizens properly maintain their personal finances and know how to easily find information that’s available to get them on track to being financially fit,” said Bredesen. “I hope all Tennesseans will observe this month by taking advantage of the financial education resources available to them.”

In conjunction with efforts of various financial literacy organizations, the Tennessee Department of Financial Institutions has developed a Financial Literacy Month Web page in the consumer resources section of its Web site. Resources available include financial tip sheets, budget planning information, educational resources, games and activities, and information on where to go for financial help.

“The department is pleased to be able to provide Tennesseans with convenient access to these financial education resources. If we can help citizens become more financially savvy, then we are making great strides in our financial literacy efforts. I encourage Tennesseans to utilize these resources and take the time to learn what other helpful and educational information our financial literacy partners provide,” TDFI Commissioner Greg Gonzales said.

TDFI’s consumer resources division was created by Bredesen in 2004 to provide meaningful consumer protection and education services statewide. The consumer resources division maintains its partnership with various financial literacy organizations such as Jump$tart, SmartTennessee and the UT extension program Tennessee Saves. These partnerships allow the department to further promote its financial education services.
