Athletic Commission Elects Joe Smith as Chairman

NASHVILLE- In a unanimous vote Sept. 14, 2009, the Tennessee Athletic Commission elected Joe Smith of Chattanooga to succeed Jack Sammons as its chairman.

Smith had previously served as vice chairman of the commission, which began July 2008. Sammons’ term ended Sept. 5. 
 
Smith operates a nonprofit boxing program for youths in his hometown of Chattanooga, Tenn. He also served as a coach for the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team and traveled with the U.S. Boxing Team to Beijing for the 2008 Olympics.
 
The Athletic Commission (www.tn.gov/commerce/athletic/) is administratively attached to the Department of Commerce and Insurance (http://www.tn.gov/commerce/index.shtml), which works to protect consumers while ensuring fair competition for industries and professionals who do business in Tennessee.
