Simmons Appointed Chief Regulatory Accountant for Financial Institutions

NASHVILLE – Commissioner Greg Gonzales has appointed Joyce Simmons to the position of Chief Regulatory Accountant at the Tennessee Department of Financial Institutions. The position was established in response to the need for heightened oversight during the current challenges facing the financial industry.
“Joyce Simmons is uniquely qualified to handle the responsibilities of this position given the current issues facing the financial services industry and its regulation,” said Gonzales. “We believe it’s critically important for there to be a designated person accountable for advising the commissioner and the regulatory divisions of the department.”
Simmons will provide advice on accounting issues in all regulatory divisions within the department. She will also be responsible for tracking the ongoing accounting changes that continue shaping the industry and help provide training to department staff.
“To be chosen for this position in these testing times is an honor,” Simmons said. “I look forward to working with Commissioner Gonzales and his team in this new role and appreciate the confidence he has placed in me.”
Simmons obtained a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in accounting from Austin Peay State University. She is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants, having served on the TSCPA Financial Institutions Committee. Prior to joining the Department of Financial Institutions, Simmons had 18 years of banking experience. She began her employment with the Department of Financial Institutions in 1988 and has worked as a Bank Examiner, Bank Financial Analyst, Director of Licensing and Financial Institutions Program Administrator.
