Architectural and Engineering Examiners Award Grants to Colleges

NASHVILLE- The Tennessee Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners has awarded grants totaling $200,000 to seven state-funded universities. These grant funds allow Tennessee colleges to purchase essential and modern instructional, computer and laboratory equipment to enhance education for students in accredited architectural, engineering, and interior design programs.

 “The Board appreciates the opportunity to assist in providing state-of-the-art instructional equipment for architecture, engineering and interior design students. Education lays the foundation to developing the knowledge and skills needed to practice a profession and protect the public, so this program is an integral part of the Board’s mission to protect the public’s health, safety and welfare,” said John Cothron, Executive Director of the Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners.
 
Receiving grant funds this year are:
 
  • Middle Tennessee State University – $3,617 to the College of Education and Behavioral Science for the interior design program. Funds will be utilized to purchase a laptop computer, projector and replacement printheads and ink cartridges.
  • Tennessee State University – $18,919 to the College of Engineering, Technology and Computer Science. Funds will be utilized to purchase computers for the mechanical engineering laboratories.
  • Tennessee Technological University – $33,505 to the College of Engineering. Funds will be utilized to purchase a distillation column for the Chemical Engineering Department, a hydraulic compression frame and attachments for the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, and to upgrade the Energy Systems Laboratory in the Mechanical Engineering Department.
  • University of Memphis – $18,934 to the College of Engineering; $2,128 to the College of Communication and Fine Arts for the interior design program. Funds will be utilized to purchase acoustic transducers, microphones and an acoustic enclosure for the College of Engineering and drafting table straightedges for the interior design program.
  • University of Tennessee-Chattanooga – $19,711 to the College of Engineering and Computer Science; $2,447 to the College of Health, Education and Professional Studies for the interior design program. Funds will be utilized to purchase a general process gas analyzer system and signal conditioning modules for the Mechanical Engineering laboratory, which will support efforts to educate students who may work for automotive companies in Tennessee, and a color printer for the interior design computer laboratory.
  • University of Tennessee-Knoxville – $43,808 to the College of Architecture and Design; $40,609 to the College of Engineering. Funds will be utilized to purchase a color imaging system, large format color scanner, large format LCD displays, graphics cards, and computer software for the College of Architecture and Design and a driving simulator for the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering Advanced Driving Simulator Laboratory.
  • University of Tennessee-Martin – $16,322 to the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences. Funds will be utilized to purchase a shake table and universal power module for the Structural Dynamics Laboratory.
 
Grant funding is provided from the Board’s revenues or reserve funds. The Tennessee General Assembly and Governor Bredesen authorized funding for the grants (2008 Public Acts, Chapter 1203, Section 50). The Board has awarded over $1.4 million in grant funds since the inception of the program in 2002.
